Week 2 (Jan 14-21, 2024): Data Collection
What do we need?
I envision the user being able to select from hundreds of images of home interior designs, before showing them the style they liked the most. This way I can tailor furniture recommendations based on the user’s likings.
I know the the first step was to figure out the popular interior design styles most users are attracted to. Through a quick Google search, I collected a list of 13 popular home decor styles in modern time:
Scandinavian
Industrial style
Mid-Century Modern
Bohemian (Boho) Style
Minimalism
Rustic/ Farmhouse Style
Art Deco
Contemporary
Transitional Style
Japanese Zen Style
Shabby Chic
Modern Farmhouse
Eclectic Style
The Styles
Now the next step is to collect images from each style, so I can have data to show the user during the onboarding process. I did this by collecting images from blog posts about each style. Below you can see images from each of the 13 styles I collected. In total I gathered 20 images for each style, totaling to 260 images for the users to eventually choose from.
The Furniture
I also need to gather furniture pieces from all the different categories so the users of this application could get decor recommendations based on their preferred styles after they design their floorplans.
For now I’m deciding to stick with recommending bedroom furniture only to keep the work simple. I’m collecting furniture from these categories:
Bed
Nightstand
Dresser
Bedside lamp
Accent chair
I collected items by searching each category of furniture on retail websites that fit the 13 design styles I listed above. Then, I collected their images, names, price, and retailer information.
Here are some contemporary/farmhouse/minimalism lamps!
Next Steps
With this collection of data, I plan to build a small database with the data (images, name, category, retailer) that I compiled from these retailers online to allow me to easily retrieve these images and show them to users once I have collected their style.
